Community Service
The Lee’s Summit R-7 School Board requires all students receiving a diploma to complete 10 hours of community service.
Those minimum, approved hours should be submitted to the community service coordinator by the end of the student’s junior year or as soon as possible.
Community service hours earned by completing the community, action and service (CAS) requirement for the IB Diploma or the 50 hours of tutoring required for students participating in the A+ program may also count toward these 10 hours.
All community service projects that are not posted online or by the community service coordinator must be pre-approved. There is no obligation to accept projects that have not been pre-approved. Service projects will be posted online at lsnh.lsr7.org under Community Service. Students are responsible for making the necessary contacts to schedule service hours. Community service cards are available in the counseling office. Cards should be taken to the service site at the time of work is completed, and must be signed by an adult supervisor present at the project location. All information on the cards should be complete. CARDS WILL NOT BE ACCEPTED WITH A PARENT'S SIGNATURE AS THE SUPERVISOR. You may pick up a blank hard copy of the community service card in the Counseling office.
Service cards should be given directly to the community service coordinator in the Counseling Office, who will sign all approved hours and record them in a permanent file. Accumulation of service hours may begin in the summer following the student’s eighth grade year.
The following activities are examples which DO NOT meet the school district guidelines for community service. This is not a complete list; it is always beneficial to have hours approved.
- Any service done as a requirement for court, or one's participant in a class, club or performance studio
- Any work completed for a for-profit business, even if no pay is received
- Babysitting in the home
- Playing a church organ or piano, singing in the choir
- Keeping stats or filming athletic events for the sole use of the coach
- Home or lawn maintenance
- Performing community service during the school day
- Duties normally performed by school staff, such as bulletin boards, grading, filing, room clean up
